Compression can help venous swelling and some lower-leg wounds, but it should follow an assessment of circulation, diagnosis, skin condition and the patient’s ability to tolerate the plan.

Review swelling, skin and wound drainage
Confirm circulation history and relevant testing
Select or follow the ordered compression approach
Teach the patient or caregiver what changes to report

Clinical limits matter.Compression may be unsafe when arterial blood flow is inadequate or when another medical condition makes fluid shifts risky.
