Wound care

Lymphedema-related wound care in St. Louis and Metro East, Illinois.

Lymphedema can cause persistent swelling, skin thickening, leakage and wounds that are difficult to manage. Treatment has to protect the skin while addressing fluid and infection risk.

How swelling affects the wound

  • Pattern and severity of swelling
  • Skin leakage, breakdown and infection concerns
  • Current compression and lymphedema therapy
  • Mobility, heart or kidney conditions and medication history
Other clinicians may be involved.

Primary care, vascular specialists, lymphedema therapists, cardiology or nephrology may be involved depending on the cause of swelling.

Where care happens

Where swelling-related wounds may be followed

Scheduled visits may take place in a home or care facility when the wound, swelling and medical history can be managed safely in that setting.

Provide the location, recent changes in swelling or drainage, current compression instructions and the clinicians already treating the patient.
